Course Matrix

Davis Foulger

This table summarizes graphically the range of courses I have taught within the field of communication over the course of my career. The table organizes over 20 different courses based on primary content (theory, practice, method, or regulation) and media scale (interpersonal, organizational, group, intermediate scale, and mass media. I have taught almost all of those courses (and a couple more) since returning to full time teaching in 2001. The only primary content area in which I have not taught a course that crosses all of these contexts is methodology, and I have prepared a generalized course on communication research methodology that has been cancelled (twice) due to low enrollment. The category divisions are somewhat imperfect. Courses depicted as purely practice generally contain a considerable measure of theory. Courses depicted as pure theory generally contain some discussion of methodology and considerable discussion of practical applications. Courses in small group, interpersonal, and intermediate scale media generally contain some measure of organizational content, and so on.

Sample syllabi can be accessed from the hyperlinks. Summary descriptions of these courses are also available.
